Manufacturing in BYTE: bills of materials, stock and costs by machine
For factories and workshops that buy materials, assemble products and track stock. Assembly follows a bill of materials, stock is valued at weighted average cost, and costs can be tagged by machine or department.
Last updated: 2 November 2026
What it covers
- Bills of materials: the components of each product, and how much of each goes into one unit.
- Assembly: build products from components, with the stock moves recorded.
- Stock by warehouse and location, valued at weighted average cost for each item and location.
- Purchase orders received in full or in part, so materials arrive in batches.
- Negative stock: you choose whether a sale or issue below zero is warned about or blocked. The default allows it.
- Costs tagged by machine, department, project or branch, with roll-ups from child to parent, read by the profit and loss report and by budgets.
- Trial balance, balance sheet and profit and loss by dimension, all from one ledger.
How it works
- Set up the bill of materials for each product: its components, and how much of each goes into one unit.
- Receive materials against purchase orders, in full or in part. Stock is valued at weighted average cost.
- Assemble the product. Components leave stock and the finished product comes in.
- Tag journal lines by machine, department or branch, and read the cost by dimension in the profit and loss report.

Questions about manufacturing in BYTE
Does BYTE support bills of materials?
Yes. Bills of materials and assembly are built for production.
How is stock valued?
At weighted average cost for each item and location. An item with no stock account is valued at purchase price and marked as estimated.
Can I see costs by machine or department?
Yes. Dimension tags on journal lines are read by the profit and loss report and by budgets, and one invoice or bill line can be split across machines, departments or projects.

Yes, if you choose to block negative stock. By default, the movement is allowed and you get a warning.
